Rumour (again): Rove to host Blankety Blanks?

Update: Is Blankety Blanks the new 6pm family entertainment show coming to TEN?

2013-11-25_2201It was back in September that whispers of a Rove-led Blankety Blanks revival for 6pm on TEN first emerged.

Then last week the network announced an ‘unnamed 6pm family entertainment show.’

TEN has been seeking to keep details under wraps so as not to tip off the opposition -but the other two are busy with News at 6pm anyway.

TV Tonight is hearing very loud tom tom drums that Rove McManus will act as host on the show’s revival for 2014.

McManus and Tasma Walton recently announced they are expecting their first child, so a new TV project might fit well with family plans to stay put in one base.

The series is also expected to have FremantleMedia’s involvement given they own the rights to the former Grundy production.

Blankety Blanks was originally hosted in Australia by Graham Kennedy on TEN and subsequently by Daryl Somers and Shane Bourne in two separate revivals.

In a recent reader poll, it was only outranked by Sale of the Century / Temptation and Spicks and Specks as the “Best Game / Quiz Show ever.

UPDATE: Token Artists has denied Rove McManus and Roving Enterprises are involved with Blankety Blanks.

  1. Wow Guys! I’d be surprised if any Television ever got made if the producers listened to people on Tv blogs.

It amazes me how negitive some people are about Every article David posts.

I personally would love Rove back on my Tv! I’ve been listening to a Lot of Podcasts he’s featured on recently and it made me release how much i missed him!

    Cant Wait!

  2. I actually think this is a good idea.

Rove has been sorely missed over the years and it would be terrific to see him back on primetime.

As for the timeslot – well 7pm will compete with H&A and repeats of TBBT.

I think it’s time to scrap the Project. It had a good run but it was never a top rating show.

And Charlie could stay with Ten being a panelist on Blankety Blanks and Hughsie has BTG (unless its axed) and Bickmore will be hosting SYTYCD – so we can’t feel too sorry if they lose their Project gigs.

And of course Steve Price will get his own show – like Andrew Bolt.

Seriously – would you want to watch 5 nights of Blankety Blanks or 5 nights of a Price / Bolt show?

  3. I loved the original Gra Gra series, but it was the late 1970’s and double entendres were the order of the day. It worked because it was so subversive. Even by the time Daryl hosted, it was all too vanilla. Rove is cheeky, but it needs the veneer of being one thing and actually being another to be truly funny and clever. It is better achieved with animated shows like Family Guy.
But I would give an updated version a go! I agree though with others about trying some fresh talent.

  4. Would love to see Blankety Blanks at 6pm. Wish FremantleMedia would allow TEN to stream old episodes of it and Nine be allowed to offer Sale of the Century streaming (lots of episodes of both are unofficially on Youtube(.

  5. This show can not possibly work with Rove as host. It needs someone with wit, ideas and the ability to interact with and bounce off the panellists. Pretty boy Rove, whose ‘comedy’ revolved around grimaces and watered-down single entendres meets none of these criteria. The family-friendly 6pm timeslot will also mean the essence of the game is watered down.

I have to agree that the one way it has any hope of working is with Shaun Micallef.

  6. I agree with others re recycled TEN comedians, same old faces, no matter where they are based. I’d actually like to see Noelene Brown (talking of re-cycled) as a resurrected panellist.

I don’t know how much of BB was rehearsed, but you definitely need people who can think on their feet, e.g. as Will Ferrell demonstrated on The Project last night. The others were all trying to hard – it was painful to watch.

And it would probably work better at 7.00 than 6.00pm.

  7. Ugh I’d be surprised if this works.

I really think Ten would benefit from getting a format like come dine with me or similar. 5 shows to wrap up up a weekly reality show challenge. The best part of MKR is the home restaurants and come dine with me on FTA would take the sails out of 7’s show.

Other thing that could work is aussie version of 4 in a Bed.

  8. This will have no chance at 6pm against the news. News at 6pm is what people expect so why try and mess with that?

I agree with @oztvheritage and @Pete and reckon having it at 7pm would be a good alternative.

    4:30pm Eyewitness News (Local)
    5:30pm Bold and the Beautiful
    6:00pm Eyewitness News (Local)
    6:30pm The Project
    7:00pm Blankety Blanks

  9. Never missed an episode, thanks to the King and his double entendres. GK personally chose the panelists and had everyone laughing their heads off with his sharp, saucy and unique wit.

Cannot see a recycled Rove making a success of this at all. Still it could be worse. If it was on Nine they would have either Eddie or Karl running the show…….the mind boggles.

  10. No!!!
Expect to see Dave Hughes Meshel Laurie, Peter Helliar, Lemo, Sam Lane, Charlie Pickering & Carrie Bickmore involved…no new faces here I’m afraid. Throw in a couple of Working Dog faces to really give the recycled feel. Maybe they could use the original set too just to reinforce it.
Ten find something new please & get some new faces.

  11. Won’t work at 6pm – so many viewers are so used to watching the news then it will always come third in the slot. I would have The Project at 6 and Blankety Blanks at 7 and it might stand a chance.

Was a very basic game show that only worked because of Graham Kennedy. nobody else could pull it off…..he…he.

  12. Certainly worth a try. I agree, Shaun would probably do a better job….but would think Shaun would not want to do something like this at this point in his career…not creative enough for him….but maybe in 10 years time.

If you had to choose anybody else…Rove would be it. And you would think it would have been a long term dream gig for Rove….following on from his TV hero.

My feeling is, it would be a much better fit for 7pm (like the original) or 5.30pm….And ten news and the Project double from 6pm.

But…yep worth a try. It needs to have plenty of spontaneous fun…like the original. Otherwise it becomes boring like the channel nine versions of the 1990’s.

    Looking forward to it already.

  13. Either they have Shaun Micallef or it won’t rate. If they don’t have Shaun Micallef, they might as well run repeats of the best version, the 70’s Graham Kennedy version as it will outrate Rove anyday.

  14. This could work …… but try to avoid rotating the same (Ten) comedians all too often in this and it could have legs …… and even appeal to the people who watched it with Graham Kennedy ……
