Deb Masters has been appointed the new Executive Producer of ABC’s Australian Story, to replace outgoing Deb Fleming.

Masters has a formidable TV journalism background producing documentaries including The Killing Season, The Howard Years, Dynasties and 100 Years: The Australian Story. She had four years with Four Corners from 2009-2014, winning the Gold Walkley and a Logie for the “Banking Bad” episode which she co-produced.

ABC Director of News Kate Torney said: “Over the course of three decades Deb Masters has been a driving force in the world of quality, longer-form programming, including many years across programs such as The 7.30 Report, Four Corners and Australian Story.

“We’re fortunate to have someone with such experience at the helm as Australian Story approaches its 20th birthday in May next year and I know we’ll see the program go from strength to strength under Deb’s leadership.”

Deb Fleming retires in mid-August.

  1. One Deb for another! The program will be in great hands indeed under Ms Masters. I remember when Ms Fleming started Aus Story, and had the pleasure of working with her on 7.30 Report in 1991. A tough but fair producer. Apropos Deb Masters, another formidable writer/producer, Deb popped up as an actor on Prisoner in 1982 playing Doreen’s Sydney flatmate! And of course Sue was producer of the show later.
