Tom Gleeson wins Gold as Seven, Nine upstaged by ABC.

ABC wins their first Gold Logie in 4 decades as Gleeson speech shocks the room.

Tom Gleeson has snatched the Gold Logie award in a night  bathed in glory for ABC.

“I thought it was Costa’s night to be honest.,”he said.

“I’m in a tricky spot. Because I love it and I hate it.”

But it wouldn’t be a Logies event without some controversy.

In a stunning and frank speech in he derided the award and shocked the room of a “dying industry.”

“Just because all of you want it and I’ve got it, don’t get angry with me. It’s alright, you’ll all survive. It’s a shame this is the last Gold Logie that’s ever going to be handed out — according to Grant Denyer, I’ve ruined the Logies. But at least I won this all by myself,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of concern that I’m turning this award into a joke. This award has done a lot of great things for a lot of different people. In the past it has represented trying to get more diversity on the screen or launching charities and that’s fantastic. But for me it represents a joke, but I love jokes. I really enjoy them. I really think we should all lighten the f*** up.

“The aim of my campaign was just to have fun with the whole thing. Because it all doesn’t really matter. It really doesn’t matter. We can have fun and just be entertaining. People get concerned about people campaigning for the award. Is that legitimate? Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know. But it is social media. It is just media. I’m just trying to be entertaining through the media. Do you know what would have been weirder? If I campaigned for this award sincerely. That would have been worse. Imagine me just sincerely saying I was humbled by the award. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. It would make me want to vomit.

“I’m taking it as a win for comedy because comedy to me is really important.”

His is the first Gold Logie for the public broadcaster in 4 decades.

ABC upstaged its commercial rivals in a night of multiple wins.

10, Foxtel, Stan and SBS  were also winners.

But the biggest TV networks had a stinker of a night.

Neither Nine nor Seven won a trophy in their own right (Deborah Mailman’s win as Most Popular Actress was for Mystery Road /Bite Club).

It must be a first for both networks.

  1. So so love the logies this year. For those people who are having a whinge this is the logie and aint important in the big picture of life. Love seeing Dylan winning I think he will be the first person to win a tennis and a logie. I don’t care I love that Gardening Australia won two logies

  2. Congratulations to Tom, but still I feel Amanda was robbed. I know Tom’s been doing his thing for quite some time now, but compared to Amanda he comes off like an upstart who got lucky.

Also wanted to mention that Julia Morris (in tandem with Costa) managed to be hilarious and succinct. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Peter Helliar…

  3. It must be the year of the red heads (gingers Kerry O’ Brien and Tom Gleeson) and hairy (Costa). South Park’s Eric Cartman wouldn’t be happy. Well done to Dylan! Having a disability makes life harder. The Young Sheldon cast were hilarious though Mee Maw should have been included. David your Logies coverage was very comprehensive.

  4. I’m ok with Tom winning and his speech, whilst too long and smug at times, had some very good moments. One issue I did have with the whole telecast though was I didn’t feel that they really celebrated the Gold Logic nominees enough this year. Instead they often seemed to be the butt of jokes or questions as to whether they were deserving to even be nominated. I normally like Peter Hellier but his bit was verging on nasty.
Highlights for me were Dylan Alcott’s and Kerry O’Briens speeches.

  5. Highlight : Dylan Alcott – what an inspiring young man.

Lowlight: Peter Helliar – couldn’t get any more cringe than that. I was embarrassed for Amanda having to stand next to him.

  6. Unfortunately I felt ill during the Red Carpet and went for a lie down, slept through the whole night, so didn’t see the Logies at all. First time I haven’t watched them.

  7. You see, it would be fine if he won and went I. This rant if he was actually funny. His opening monologue was full of obvious jokes on easy targets, and most fell flat in the room. I was half expecting a Nikki Webster joke to be thrown in for good measure.

Comedy can be selective and everyone has their own style, but insult comedy is down there with sarcasm when it comes to what is considered good comedy. Is it any wonder the TV industry is in a shambles if this guy is its spokesman?

  8. Just reading all the comments makes me wonder if the Emmys and Baftas have all this kind of controversy with their award shows. Kinda puts a big downer on it for me. I just wish people would relax and enjoy the Logies for the entertainment they bring to our TV screens once a year and be happy for the winners !

  9. How anyone can be mad at Tom for winning Gold over, say, Costa taking home two trophies for “most popular” is beyond me.

The Logies categories/voting system certainly needs a shake-up but ABCs wins were well-deserved, Tom was funny and on-point, and it was fantastic to see Dylan Alcott recognised for yet another talent of his.

  10. Well I was surprised, I really didn’t think he’d win. When his name was first called I thought they were being funny then realised he really did win. Well good on him, but would have preferred one of the others. I was happy with some winners & disappointed with others. I’ll be glad when bloody Wentworth finishes so it won’t get all the nominations.

  11. Beyond the joke, I found the social commentary & perspective within the speech to be quite profound. It can be reflected upon as to the speech, reactions, conclusions and feelings of the nominees & observers. I thought the outcome was positive for new progress & not negative.

I think Tom Gleeson would have still been able to win gold Logie with an ordinary campaign, given that Hard Quiz is very popular in its own right. I would like to see Amanda Keller receive a Logie in the future. She has been a part of many television programs in the past & has made a vast contribution.

  12. Great winner.
Been a long time fan of Tom’s TV work and comedy. It’s not like he’s magically appeared on our screens overnight.
Thoroughly enjoyed his roast-like speech. Made some very valid points about jealousy within the industry (just like life) and about the need to change TV up or it really could be a dying industry.

  13. I think it reflects the lack of respect seven and nine have for their viewers and the love this country has for their ABC. Well done to the winners.

    1. It is voted by people who are interested in voting for the logies
I could not care less who wins.
Good luck if you enjoy the ABC or Ten shows.

  14. What an absolute travesty. Toms Gold, Costas win as best presenter and the little known abc drama winning most popular categories. Even the most popular actor and actress wins were a bit suss. How do abc win the most popular votes, when one, there were more deserving winners and two its meant to be most “popular”?

    1. Ah… maybe because and in spite of many commentators the ABC have genuine people both serious and very funny people..but all the knockers continue watching those “reality” shows you’ll learn a lot from people who are so intelligent and shows that are so “enjoyable”.

      Go Tom go Kostas

    2. Popular means they received the most votes. The shows/people that won quite obviously received the most votes.
I disagree with there being more deserving winners, are you suggesting the whole thing is fixed?

    3. Not sure if you are serious or not but it comes from people like me (who have not voted before) voting for people and shows that deserve to win. Loved his speech and love the fact that 7 and 9 didn’t get anything….wonder if they will get the message ????

    4. Why? I posted here a few weeks ago that Costa’s Show that night had outrated Sam Macs, Waleed’s, Amanda’s and Eves Shows. Why should he not win a Logie. Toms show out rates all the other Gold nominees. To use the word travesty is a bit extreme. Tom was brilliant last night.

  15. Brilliant winner’s speech. Superb campaign – of the type that, in the old days, network publicists ran for the commercial networks by buying a gazillion copies of TV Week and filling out the entry form. I Gleeson’s campaign resonates on all sorts of levels in today’s climate of media manipulation. Just a brilliant piece of comedy.

  16. His speech will go down in Logies history.
“Lighten the f*** up” promoting ticketmaster to his show and Netflix, stan. “How good was Chernobyl.
    Gold!

    1. And don’t forget his test pattern/Foxtel comments. Hilarious!! His Channel 9 no stars left comments at the very start really set the night up. Bring Tom back #whoshughsey haha

  17. Is there anyone who doesn’t think Gleeson’s win is the ultimate ironic comment on the Logies? It’s clearly the result of viewers getting on board his trolling of the awards over the past two years and voting “ironically” (to put it kindly). It’s actually pretty amazing that even after 60 years the Logies hasn’t managed to gain any legitimacy.

    1. It can’t as long as it mixes “popularity” awards with “outstanding” awards, swinging from hilarity to gravitas without any hint of self awareness.

What gets me is the number of people who don’t follow the Logies and really have no interest in them being so sanctimonious.

  18. That was one of the best thinga I’ve seen on TV in years. It was a bit of a joke, but we’ve known for years that the voting system was a joke. Opening it up to social media just highlighted that fact.

Also loved the fact that Seven and Nine didn’t take home much. It’s a welcome change.

  19. At least he acknowledged that the Logies need the Outstanding Comedy Program award back.

As much as I preferred Amanda Kellar to win, he has been popular with Hard Quiz as host (I love the show) and his segments on The Weekly.

  20. Despite the wolves howling at the midnight moon, that was one of the best things I’ve seen on Australian TV in quite some time. Lol.
He had some very very valid points about the whole thing sandwiched in there.
A thoroughly deserving winner in my eyes!! ?
Keller will win it eventually… just not this year.
