UK suspends MP for joining I’m a Celebrity in Australia

Brits deem politician's participation in UK reality series "a matter serious enough to warrant suspension."

Former UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock has been suspended as a Conservative MP for being a contestant on the British edition of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! now in production in Australia.

According to the BBC, Tory whips have been unimpressed with the news that he will be one of the 12 contestants on the new series.

Conservative Chief Whip Simon Hart said: “Following a conversation with Matt Hancock, I have considered the situation and believe this is a matter serious enough to warrant suspension of the whip with immediate effect.”

Hancock was not revealed on the contestant list issued yesterday but is understood to be one of two contestants who will join the show slightly later than episode one, along with comedian and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Seann Walsh.

I’m a Celebrity has returned to Australia after two years away, due to the pandemic, with former Voice coach Boy George heading the cast.

  1. Sadly, Matt Hancock embodies everything that’s so horribly wrong with today’s British politicians on both sides of the supposed political divide: sleazy, incompetent, careerist and a massive ego.

Needless to say, his embarrassing lack of self-awareness makes him ideal jungle fodder for I’m A Celebrity.

  2. I think there’s a fine line between promoting affairs, business interests that are beneficial to the constituency, and diplomacy, as opposed to doing things that are away from the constituency that may not be fruitful.

It should be asked as to how appearing on the TV show is beneficial to the constituency.

    1. I think it could’ve been viewed differently if this was filmed in the UK but halfway round the world when his party might require his services is ridiculous. Also he’s got commitments to his electorate.
