Robert Irwin tops list of popular broadcast personalities

I'm a Celebrity co-host edges Hamish Blake out of top broadcast spot in Australian Talent Index.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! co-host Robert Irwin has been named Australia’s most popular broadcast personality in the Australian Talent Index’s 2024 Top Talent Report.

Just 20 years old Irwin, a relative newcomer to Australian screens, eclipsed the last winner, Lego Masters, Hamish Blake – in his debut appearance on the list.

Irwin was also voted number one broadcast talent by females and was considered to be the top celebrity who gives the most back to the community.

“I’m so excited to be honoured with the top spot in broadcast in this year’s Top Talent Report. Having an even greater platform to share my family’s message of conservation means the world to me,” he said.

The Top Talent Report showcases the latest findings of the Australian Talent Index – a comprehensive talent measurement system that gauges consumers’ awareness, attitudes, and sentiments towards a range of Australian talent, including celebrities, actors, broadcasters, sports stars, and politicians. A nationally representative sample of more than 7,000 Australians were surveyed by Lewers Research since the report’s inception, rating more than 400 personalities, and providing comments on how they felt about each one*.

The Australian Talent Index is calculated by subtracting the proportion of people who disliked a personality from those who liked or loved them, giving each a score ranging from -100 (universally disliked) through to +100 (universally liked).

*Methodology: A survey of more than 7,000 Australians, conducted by Lewers Research, were asked their opinion on a range of personalities across media, broadcast and sport. The Australian Talent Index uses a world-leading emotion detection algorithm with a taxonomy identifying 97 micro-emotions and AI. The Talent Corp Australian Talent Index ranges from -100 to +100 based on how recognisable and liked a personality is (the higher the number the better). Lewers also asked people to provide a few words to describe how they felt about each personality. These words were classified into emotions based on an extensive library of over 20,000 words and phrases to identify how people feel about a personality. As a final step, respondents played a type of word association game to understand their gut reaction to different personalities.

  1. I must be one of the few people who can’t stand the Irwins

They do good work with their zoo and to advocate for animal conservation – but I don’t need to see them everywhere, especially when they are (in my eyes) average TV talent at best.

I hope people who enjoy them do enjoy whatever their appeal is, but I’ll switch off whatever they are on.

  2. I think voting Robert Irwin as number 1 top broadcast and male talent. Shows that we need new blood on the tv. But what an big load to put on his young shoulders when he has only made fleeting appearances. I also thought with most trusted tv news and current affairs with Tracey Grimshaw being listed shows her strength when she hasn’t been on tv for a good year now. Also female talent was interesting with Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson polling well despite not being on tv for a while.

  3. “… more than 7,000 Australians… were asked their opinion on a range of personalities across media, broadcast and sport.”

So the list of personalities to choose from was curated and selected by researchers. Explains some of the more curious results then.

  4. Seems very Sydney-focussed and to be honest a little bizarre, I mean Robert Irwin? Ash Barty? Sam Kerr? Even names like Shane Jacobson, Miguel Mastrae and Manu Fieldel haven’t exactly been on fire in recent times and don’t even get me started on some of those now Hollywood names. I can understand Liz Hayes as she’s national with 60 Minutes and Under Investigation, but that’s very generous to Peter Overton with Nine News Sydney (maybe they were looking at when he does national presentations like Elections and acknowledging he was national for years at 60 Minutes). You’re leaving out a stack there, what about the likes of stalwarts in Rick & Sue at Seven Perth? Or Peter Mitchell or Peter Hitchener in Melbourne?

  5. Theatrical talent must have 1 and 2 swapped around. Love Hugh but he is seriously not Chris Hemsworth! Also agree good luck to Robert but they didn’t include Todd Woodbridge. While not in his role for very long, we are finding him entertaining as well. Showing promising signs rather than already a “top talent”. One to watch in my opinion. Also, were news people who were voted for only from capital cities? Should ask regional viewers. Lastly, disgusted Peter Hitchener was not even on the list.

  6. Good luck to Robert, but top broadcast talent…ahhhh no. Is this rule 1 of building credibility with viewers, or part of the publicity machine for Im a celeb??? 10 would be rubbing their hands together looking at this.

    1. I was thinking the same thing. I’ve seen him on The Cheap Seats and Celeb Googlebox. Not sure how that tops the list.

But then Grant Denyer was voted most exposed in this year’s TVT awards, despite having appeared only on The Amazing Race.

    1. I second that , I can’t really take to him at all , but on another note I had forgotten IACGMOOH starts Sunday , this is how much I pay attention to Channel 10 or much FTA these days.
