Why Jonathan LaPaglia welcomes whispering at Tribal Council

Australian Survivor host has no problem with contestants in a 'live' Tribal scramble.

Anyone who has seen Australian Survivor -or indeed the US Survivor– is more than familiar when Tribal Council goes off script and contestants begin to scramble in a flurry of whispers.

The viewers aren’t always privy to the gameplay despite this being a Reality genre, unless producers add helpful subtitles.

Bur should producers allow the whispering or is the time for scrambling over?

“First of all, where’s the fun in that?” asks Jonathan LaPaglia.

“You want to see a little scrappiness at Tribal. And then second of all, they actually don’t get much time. That is part of the problem with the format we do. Because the schedule is so tight and so jammed up, that by the time they finish the challenge and get back to beach, there’s not much time for them strategise before they have to come to Tribal. And I think that’s one of the issues with our show.

“So I would argue that they need all the time they can get… it’s gonna be a Tribal, let’s do it!”

  1. The success of first time players has been the key factor for many fans this season. The return of veteran players could have even hindered this exciting, unpredictable dynamic. If I could describe this season in one word, it would be chaos. But a beautiful, exhilarating kind of chaos. And I love it. #TeamCaroline

  2. I just have to say again… what an incredible season this has become. Certainly in the top 2 if not the best Aussie survivor season yet. The Kirby and Ferras narrative has been so compelling… having two unbelievable players who read the game so well is so fun to watch. They are discipline and clever enough to know when to strike and when to lay down their weapons… not to mention they have an impeccable way of dictating the moves but have so far escaped serious heat at tribal (until last night with Alex, but he was just desperate in every sense of the word). Just on Alex, he had no idea how to play the game… he genuinely thought he was playing well… you should never insult the very people you hope are going to help you moments before they actually vote… lol. Amateur. It’s stark how badly he played when you have two absolute titans in Kirby and Ferras. Either one of them deserve to win and I would love for both of them to be in the final.. that would make a thrilling end.

    1. It certainly has been an interesting season, but I think the idea of building a resume has resulted in a lot of silly play. I think Kirby personifies this, she does things just for the sake of doing them but she is building up a lot of bad will with the jury. As much as Faras compares himself to George (who only every played half the game) Kirbys brand of chaos is more inline with Georges game. Another thing that gets me is they are very against the idea of goats, but sometimes being a goat is the smartest play in a situation. Sandra considered one of the highest regarded 2 times winners was very much a goat in her first win.

  3. I don’t mind the whispering in tribal. The looks on the faces of the ones who aren’t included in the whispering is the best. Alex last night though was a bit ridiculous to just let him go on and on. I think he saw who was in the jury panel and wanted to get in there!
