Logie Awards 2024: nominations

Robert Irwin, Julia Morris, Larry Emdur, Andy Lee, Sonia Kruger, Tony Armstrong & Asher Keddie in the race for Gold!

10’s Robert Irwin & Julia Morris, Nine’s Andy Lee, Seven’s Sonia Kruger & Larry Emdur, ABC’s Tony Armstrong and Foxtel’s Asher Keddie will all compete for the Gold Logie at this year’s Logie Awards to be held in August.

Nominees announced today in Sydney saw a swathe of Streaming nominees from Netflix, Binge, Stan, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Disney+ swamp nominations in Drama and Comedy categories, as well as half the Documentary category.

There are big changes to this year’s awards with only 3 Popular categories and all remaining retitled as Best.

TV Week Editorial Director Amber Giles said: “As always, this is an exciting list of nominees for the TV Week Logie Awards with some of Australia’s best talent and shows up for awards. With the nominations announced, it’s now over to the public to have their say. The public can vote on more categories than ever before, so if you are passionate about TV and want to see your favourite stars and shows shine, then get voting!”

  1. Definitely a mistake to ditch the separate popular and outstanding categories. If they wanted to shorten the broadcast, then they could have mainly focused on the popular categories, since that’s what the public actually voted for. The Yearly and the Weekly being nominated separately makes no sense…the Yearly is just a special episode of The Weekly! Seven seemed to have remembered they have other male personalities that aren’t Dr Chris Brown…

  2. It’s pretty obvious that Larry Emdur is the hot favourite for Gold. But after decades in the industry with enduring popularity, who could begrudge him?

    Aside from that…

*With the restructuring, I’d say Gogglebox could fail to score a win for the first time (COVID break aside) since that program began.
*Although Tipping Point Australia/Todd Woodbridge weren’t nominated, it’s important to remember they were only on-air for a couple of months of the nomination eligibility period. They’ll most likely be up there in 2025.
*Surely there should be a “Special Event” category for things like Carols and NYE?
*Can’t see the ABC renewing Better Date Than Never, after it failed to score a Logies nomination for a second consecutive year along with general disinterest in that program!

As for the Hall of Fame, I reckon a certain Perth newsreading duo (who’ll mark 40 years together in 2025) might receive this year’s induction.

      1. Which is dumb, right? As he will have his total votes split over two nominations, meaning he may get the most votes from selectors (15% for one role, 18% for the other, combined 33% of all votes) whereas another actor might get 30% of the votes and wins, so if it’s a “first last the post” system, actors are at a disadvantage if they are nominated twice? So it’s really best role, not best actor. Unless it’s counted differently?

        1. Both ABC and Seven would have put him forward for performance. I don’t think networks do much checking with each other about who they are putting up, there’s probably no rule for or against that.

  3. Love that Tony is about to win Gold! Sad to see Grant Denyer hasn’t had a nom seeing that he had a fantastic comeback into the limelight with a hit show (Despite being on Network “the worst” Ten) – This whole system of nomination / voting is out of whack. Cheap Seats = Robbed!!! Also Hard quiz is the dullest show by the anti-logie, the unfunny comedian who I forget the name of but he has the same schtick in everything he does….Terry something

    1. Well you need to thank “Terry” for your mate Grant getting the gold in a year where the only show he was involved in was axed and he was off air for the majority of the year.

  4. I think it’s a well-thought out list for the Gold Logie. Though I think Robert Irwin seems to be in there for the popularity vote with the young fan base, as it’s mainly I’m a Celeb that is noteworthy, other than some appearances on subscription TV. You can at least say Tony Armstrong hosted NITV’s Yokayi Footy and ABC’s A Dog’s World, Offsiders, Tony Armstrong’s Extraordinary Things etc. So there’s extensive free-to-air experience and exposure with Tony Armstrong. I could write more about the contributions of the other nominees as well. It’ll be interesting to see the outcome.

I personally think it could be Larry’s time, given the longevity, though the same could be said for all of the other nominees. It’ll probably be close, that’s for sure.

  5. Would love to see Julia get the gold. She cops a lot of flak, however IACGMOOH is now a decade old and the transition this year was handled with great professionalism. Alternatively, Larry would be my second choice. Was just saying to my sis the other day he’s had a long career on our screens, as has Julia.

  6. Very Sydney-oriented (cough cough, excuse me) *PR team nominations list…

Peter Overton? Sonia Kruger (LOL at “Logies Red Carpet”)? Larry Emdur (as much as his entire career may be deserving)? And what’s with Asher Keddie (as much as I love her- but she’s already won Gold and a stack of other Logies and awards about a decade ago when she was Ten and TV’s ‘golden girl’.

  7. They should really return back to the public being able to vote for the shortlist nominees…I hope that next year they will listen to feedback and bring back the most popular and outstanding award system like previous years again.

  8. Always have questions about the Logies but something that has me stumped is how is Asher Keddie up for a gold but not in any other categories?

  9. Really disappointed with the lack of anything for Neighbours. Considering the outcry when the show ended, it’s wonderful return and that the show was nominated for the Daytime Emmy’s with Stefan and Annie presenting an award there. It’s like it is invisible. Stefan Dennis deserves a gold Logie at the very least.

    1. But think of it the other way wouldn’t Neighbours be happier they were up for two emmy awards than another Logie….. as no australian soap has ever been nominated for a emmy before

  10. The lack of Tipping Point Australia being nominated is completely wrong. Top rating entertainment show Thurs/friday every week and Australia’s #1 weekday game show – disappointing oversight.

Also sad Todd didn’t get a look in, clearly more profile than most….but then again, the dullest of the dull can lobby their way to a Logie win, hello Tom G

  11. Wow. This would have to be one of the many limited photos where Sonia isn’t doing her signature pose of touching her ear to make sure it’s still there.

Overall nominations are pretty spot on if I say.

Hoping Tony or Larry get the gold.

  12. I actually audibly groaned when I saw Robert Irwin for Gold… that right there sums up how nonsensical the whole “Gold” thing is.
    Other musings:
    1. Felix Cameron needs to win for lead actor in a drama. He was phenomenal for someone so young to carry a tricky show like that so well.
    2. Hamish has no chance in the presenter category… he’s up against “Gold” nominees after all right? lol.
    3. Simon Baker as lead is a stretch…
    4. Rob Sitch needs to be recognised for Utopia. Even if it’s just for pure acknowledgement of that company and all they’ve done for Australian comedy.
    5. Kate Box should win for her excellent performance in last year’s most unexpected hit for me.. Deadloch.
    6. The Clearing being nominated for anything is absolutely laughable.
    7. Yay for some love for Erotic Stories .. but Boy Swallows Universe was remarkable. Also Love Me needs to win best drama.
    8. Utopia or Deadloch for comedy is nice! Both so deserving.
    9. Go Gogglebox!! MAFS even nominated is embarrassing.

  13. Disappointing Home & Away’s luck of nominations. No point in cast attending. How could Neighbours be included for Daytime Emmy’s but not Logies? Is this first time H&A got snubbed for Best Drama? Dr. Chris Brown much better than Robert Irwin. I don’t have Stan, Prime Video or Foxtel. Original Mother & Son was much better. Annual events programs such as Carols and New Years Eve shouldn’t be nominated. Why does By Candlelight get a nod but not In the Domain?

    1. And they thought that dude from hard quiz killed the logies?…. Some of these categories and nominees are a joke. Cars by candlelight? Really the snooze fest that is ABCs NYE….. Really? Why is Larry Embur so popular all of a sudden?
Seeing so many streaming programs nominated Really shows Australian TV is dead.
I am also curious if Network 10 as a whole will be featured in the in memoriam or just the death of their ratings.

  14. The Logies are completely flawed now. We have no say now on who is up now, a panel does. This is why i stand behind what i said earlier in the year when Popular and Outstanding should have remained seperate and let the industry choose their choice and we choose ours. Sure we vote on the winners but honestly, the fact Australia’s #1 drama isn’t on the list anywhere bar a new talent nominee says it all really but its not just that. Also how are shows like Idol and The Voice not seen as competition reality when that is exactly what they are? Just to get a nomination? I guess we will see what happens when everything is announced.

    1. +1.

Why the change? Popular Awards nominees should be voted by fans. Outstanding Awards by those in the industry. Like what the Logies been doing for over 60 years.

  15. Bob Irwins Gold Logie nomination goes to show no matter how much they change the rules they are still an absolute joke. In theory the Gold Logie is saying that in all Australian television produced and aired in the last 12 months the recipient has contributed the most, be it the most moving performance the most entertaining presenting’ potentially the best writing or journalism. But the reality is some kid with a famous surname who was a co presenter on a reality tv show with absolutely no experience is the best the Australian television industry can produce.

  16. I’m sorry but the train wreck that is always the ABC NYE is up for a Logie????? Reallllllly?

Robert Irwin shouldn’t be up for gold either, he is just a beginner. Should be up for best new talent though,

      1. Yes that’s ridiculous… even more so knowing that The Yearly is taking up a spot… for a once a year effort that is the regular show just in a special end-of-year slot… the Cheap Seats is a 28-30 episode a year program… disappointingly baffling.

    1. Yes, The Cheap Seats should have been given a nomination, given the rise to fame and the work that must go into producing it. As well as the outstanding hosts.

  17. This is the first time the streaming platforms really come to the fore at the Logie Awards. They even take over an entire category (best supporting actor).

Carols by Candlelight getting nominated for best entertainment program is very interesting.

The Weekly with Charlie Pickering and The Yearly have both been nominated for Best Comedy Entertainment Program. I think only The Weekly should be eligible as The Yearly is just the end-of-year variant of The Weekly.

I could not believe that Seven has been nominated for its coverage of FIFA Women’s World Cup, but Optus Sport was snubbed given it was the main broadcaster.

If Sigourney Weaver gets the nod as Best Lead Actress in a Drama, she will become the first American since Joel Madden (Most Popular New Male Talent in 2013) to win a Logie Award. I wonder if she will make her way to Sydney to attend the ceremony?

  18. TV’s newcomer Robert Irwin against veteran Larry Emdur. Let the battle begin. lol.

Also very surprised that Home and Away isn’t anywhere – except for one single entry for New Talent. Last year, there were half a dozen nominees for them. Shame about Neighbours not being there either.

While Boy Swallows Universe dominates the acting awards + new talent and up for Mini Series. I’ve heard of many streaming shows, but I haven’t heard of this one.

Why is Australian Idol up for Best Entertainment Program, and not Best Reality Competition Program?

  19. So the #1 drama on television Home and Away gets hardly any nominations? Going from consecutive most popular drama wins and popular acting noms to hardly anything… absolutely disgraceful . Watch the ratings plummet

    1. Sorry completely disagree. Just because Home and Away is seen as the number 1 drama doesn’t make it Logie worthy. If you compare the people nominated in acting categories they are so much better than the acting in Home And Away. The more I look at these nominations the more I do like them… personally I hope Robert or Julia do not win as I don’t like the presentation style.

      1. You miss the point I think. What made these awards unique was the blend of popular and outstanding categories. They were clearly distinguishable and now they’ve been merged I think it will alienate viewers and make the awards seem less relevant to mainstream viewers. You have to remember no one watches AACTA or Helpmann awards etc. They award critically acclaimed high quality content solely and the Logies never have. That may be why out of all awards shows they’re still the most watched – remember not everyone sits down to quality critically acclaimed television and those viewers and their choices were a mainstay part of the Logies. Now that’s not really the case

        1. I completely get the point. Simply just because something rates doesn’t make it Logie worthy. I think by merging them it is actually helping the better performances being nominated or actually win. For years the Logie have award what is popular rather than what is actually good

          1. Yes…hence the name of the award (“Most Popular”). “Outstanding” rewarded what I suspect you would consider “actually good”. Given its lack of nominations, will the cast of “Home and Away” even be invited to the event? Ditto for “Neighbours”. I’m with Ryan on this one. I’ve watched The Logies since I was a very young child in the early 80s and I’m not enthused about this year’s ceremony. I see a fantastic list of nominees for the old “Outstanding” categories, but not much on the “most popular” front.
