TEN whinge over cricketer comments

Chris Lynn's dig at broadcast delays results in a written apology after TEN demands action from Cricket Australia.

2015-01-10_1456Brisbane Heat cricketer Chris Lynn has been forced to write a written apology to Network TEN after a sly dig at the delayed broadcast of the Big Bash League in Queensland.

Last week on air Lynn said of his team’s standing, “We’re going to need something …. otherwise we might only see the one positive out of the delayed coverage for the Queensland viewers.”

But according to News Corp:

It sparked a major blow-up from Ten who contacted Cricket Australia demanding action against Lynn.

CA issued the Heat with a “please explain” and at one stage it appeared the Heat may been forced to fine Lynn for making comments which they privately supported.

In the end Lynn was asked to write an apology to the network and not discuss it publicly. Social media users, supportive of his remarks, were even offering to help pay any fine with the hashtag #IllcoveryouLynny.

TEN has slated earlier broadcasts in Adelaide this week and Perth viewers can watch Live via ONE, but Brissy viewers remain on delay.

But the network demanding an apology has now attracted negative social comments of its own. Refer: Streisand Effect.

TEN did not respond with comment by publication.

  1. @Guy – I don’t work for Ten.
@David Knox – that’s when I thought that we were going back to the bad old days in 1980s or 1990s when only Bathurst shown live with a highlights program at 11pm at night for other races. Little did I know that we were going to get more coverage for the 6 main events and we are going to get a lot more airtime this year compared to Seven televising the V8s from 2007 to around 2011.

  2. @William

Do you work for Channel Ten? Delayed sports are a joke. Sport should be shown Live everywhere not delayed. Yet we still have it happening in 2015. It can be shown Live in the UK or America but oh no Australia gets its own sport delayed. What a crock! The networks need to wake up and pull their fingers out. They all have 3 channels each. So show it or lose it. Give it to another network who will show it live.

  3. Certainly ch10 paid $20 mil per season for the BBL.They are looking to maximise their return. Cricket Australia negotiated a contract that allowed for this to happen and ultimately the buck stops with them. The best and arguably only way to get the outcome that fans in QLD and other affected states want is to not watch the delayed coverage.

  4. @William Not everyone has/wants/can afford Foxtel. I don’t have it and won’t be getting it. I would only watch the sports channels so why pay good money for umpteen channels I would never watch.

    1. Speaking of short memories, William perhaps you could elaborate on your U turn of the V8s deal, as I’m a bit confused….. A year ago you wrote “V8 Supercars have just announced the worst possible coverage of V8s in Australia” and repeatedly called for James Warburton’s sacking? Thanks.

  5. Ten is so terrible at scheduling over Summer. Why not have FF on Ten and Eleven in Brisbane? That could mean it push the BBL matches live on One. That would mean that Ten can replay all the matches at 8:30PM. The thing about BBL delays is that people start turning off the TV because they can get really angry.

  6. Oceanographer, TEN are free to take issue with the comments, just as fans are free to take issue with their continued poor treatment of viewers.

And they are also free to cancel the broadcast contract. It’s not like no other network would pick up the BBL. TEN aren’t doing favours, they aren’t special.

Do the job properly or bugger off.

I can’t wait to see how they handle the backlash over V8s…

They’re in for a rough year.

    Seriously.

  7. @DaveM @TasTVCameramen @Craig – come on we get 1 more round that Foxtel. The V8s are slightly delayed on Sunday, we get it in HD on One at 8.30pm and plus it’s live on Foxtel.

  8. I think people are forgetting the fact Ten pay $20m a season and yes they should be showing live into Queensland for that price. However with paying all that money they have some responsibility to pull players in line who choose to bite the hand they are feeding from. The Big Bash is the only real money earner a lot of these state players get so they can’t be too critical of where the money is coming from.

  9. Rather childish channel 10. Rather than cop valid criticisms on the chin you make the situation worse for yourselves by behaving in this manner.

This from viewer who has thought your big bash coverage has been quite good but childish behaviour like this taints that view.

  10. Appalling behaviour from Ten. They continue to disregard QLD viewers and then have the audacity to make trouble for one of the professionals helping to make their program who made a passing comment on what is a ludicrous situation.

Cricket Australia have also displayed their weakness in kowtowing to Ten and forcing Lynn to write an apology. wtf, are we back in school? And what, exactly, is it that he is apologising for? Speaking the truth? Disgraceful behaviour from both Ten and CA.

  11. In Perth we have the bash on One Hd.
Why cant they have Brisbane Games on One.
Sorry Ten this is why you are on the bottom.
Plus you claim Family Feud no 1 Quiz show.
Give me a break. Hot Seat and MDM Are much better.

  12. DaveM, what 10 is doing is exactly what 7 did to kill motorsport in Australia in the first place.

Way back before Super League, 7 used to only show Bathurst and Sandown and since people could not follow and therefore become invested in the complete series, no-one watched. When Super League hit people were looking for something to watch when 10 presented the V8 supercars complete which exploded into the series we see today.

This move is bad for the sport and another step on the Rupert pay for everything model.

I refuse to give any money to Rupert, so I am looking for a new sport.

  13. If you can’t handle what they say don’t give them a mic.

Or don’t be one of the few places in the world that doesn’t broadcast sport live and in HD.

  14. Channel Ten, ABC and Channel 9 need to grow up and give everyone Live sport. No delays. Channel Seven can manage it so why can’t everyone else? Its a joke really. Ten can’t take the heat and they wonder why they are where they are in the ratings…..

  15. Ten, maybe it shows that even the players don’t agree with your broadcasting methods meaning delays into cities that are not the Golden Triangle (Syd,Mel & ACT).
If Ten don’t change it could lead to players not choosing to play the BBL in future years.
I find it abhorrent that Cricket Australia would be complicit in this as they also are treating ‘the other states’ with contempt in regards to this.

  16. A bit of a beat up over the truth, I agree with #DaveM about the V8 supercars, we are not happy even now, so we wait to see what actually happens.

Ten, take the comments as feedback and act on feedback…..do not get upset…..just see it from the viewers perspective……..which I do not think any network sees it from……..otherwise we would have shows starting on time………shock horror one of the other networks may gain a percentage point.
