ABC forgets Chris Lilley in Logie nominations

Very Angry Boy Chris Lilley misses out on Logie contention in the Popular categories after ABC forgets to submit his show.

The ABC has overlooked submitting Chris Lilley and Angry Boys for the Most Popular categories at the 2012 Logie Awards.

It means Lilley is ineligible for the Gold Logie award.

“This is extremely disappointing for everyone who worked on Angry Boys and for fans hoping to vote,” Lilley said in a statement yesterday.

“I have always enjoyed performing at the Logies whenever I have a show out so it will be a shame not to be included. Due to this oversight you will NOT be able to vote in the Silver and Gold categories for the 2011 Logie Awards.

“The Logies have been notified but have refused to add Angry Boys and Chris Lilley to the voting lists as the ABC missed the deadline for submission.”

A statement from ABC conceded, “The omission was a result of an administrative oversight by ABC TV. We have made wholehearted apologises to both Chris and Laura Waters, his producer.

“Chris’s outstanding role in Angry Boys has always been on the network’s Most Outstanding categories list to be submitted to the Logies early next year.”

Despite mixed reviews for the comedy, ABC1 Channel Controller Brendan Dahill recently told TV Tonight, “I’m really proud of Angry Boys and I want to work with Chris again.”

2012 Logie contenders are listed here.

  1. @Moanique – if by ridiculous you mean untrue, I wonder what you are basing that premise on. Oh, that’s right, chatting with your friends. Well, I could conduct my own equally-biased survey of all *my* friends, family, and neighbours and I would draw the conclusion that nobody liked it at all.

So why don’t we go with the carefully-sampled data that advertisers are willing to bet millions of dollars on being accurate? Angry Boys’ ratings bobbled around the 600k mark for most of its run so, in a country of 22m people, I’m going to say that most people didn’t like it, you and your friends notwithstanding.

  2. @Ash, exactly, i mean if Karl Stefanovic can be nominated then actually win, well yeah… Personally i found AB a bit dissapointing which is hardly suprising given all the hype & advertising before the show started, it just couldnt live up to expectations, it did have its funny moments though but there was alot of rehashing of previous material from Lilley.

  3. @ Secret Squirrel….” The simple fact is that most people didn’t like it “. What an absolutely ridiculous statement ! I have quite a large circle of friends and acquaintances and most of them loved it, whether they watched it on tv, iview, or DVD. I realise people have a different sense of humour to each other, but I maintain that anyone that didn’t find Angry Boys at all funny just didn’t get it. Intelligent humour seems to go straight over peoples heads.

  4. You know, this is the sort of thing that the ABC could write a sitcom about- wait it has! Jacki Weaver played a housewife whose name was submitted as a joke as a candidate for an upcoming state election. The seat was so welded to one party the opposing parties didn’t even bother running candidates in the seat. Bud Tingwell played the local party functionary who in a fit of absentmindedness forgot to submit his party’s candidate until it was too late, basically awarding the seat to Weaver’s character, and she becoming an MP. Matt Day in one of his earliest roles played Weaver’s teenage son, and William Zappa played the party heavy, the first time I’d seen him act.

I can’t remember the name of the series though.

  5. Geez your comment sections are going downhill fast with all these negative nelly’s who seem hellbent on trashing everything and everyone on tv! Chris could sneeze and it would be more entertaining than anything you all came up with.

  6. I liked Angry Boys. It could have done with a shorter season, IMO, and was a bit patchy in parts, but it once it drew into the final stretch of episodes the quality picked up. It wasn’t funny in the same way Summer Heights High was but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe it shouldn’t even be categorised as a ‘comedy’ but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth anything in whatever genre it fits into. I think it’s a real shame ABC failed to submit it.

Let’s not forget the Logies aren’t exactly the benchmark of high quality broadcasting… come on, the popular categories are dominated by soap stars. So saying it’s not “worthy” of nomination is a bit rich.

  7. Really don’t understand all the hate here. I loved it. Quite a lot of people I spoke to about it loved it.

Regardless, he should have been put up for nominations. I mean, I think Home & Away is beyond awful, but I still think they have the right to be nominated.

  8. I thought Angry Boys was awful, compared to Lilley’s previous offerings. That’s what I thought, but it also showed in the woeful ratings and the critical response to this series. I don’t think it deserved to be nominated. The same went for John Blackman when he whined about Darryl Somers not being nominated. But Lilley is quite established, he could possibly strive to do better than Angry Boys if he has any future offerings or productions.

  9. Not the first time a program or people have been snubbed for a Logie nomination by a mistake by a broadcaster. In November 2005, the Socceroos played Urugruy in two legs for the last of 32 spots in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. SBS is famous for the thriller 2nd leg in Sydney on 16/11/2005. But these two matches did not even garner a Logie nomination. Why?

Because SBS submitted the boring 1-1 draw in the first leg in Montevideo to the Logies voting panel, not the legendary second leg in Sydney by mistake. What the voting panel saw was boring and dull and the coverage did not get much traction. And given that was a huge year for outstanding sports coverage, SBS’s chances were not helped either.

But SBS did learn from this mistake and 12 months later and did submit the 1-0 Socceroos loss to Italy instead and won a Logie for “Outstanding Sports Coverage” at the 2007 Logies.

  10. Don’t they have limited number of people they can enter? He didn’t deserve a nomination and it’s bad form to complain about it for not getting one. What on earth does he have to gain by taking his complaint with the network public? If he’s so desperate for adoration he should have checked if they were submitting his name.

  11. Yes tall poppy syndrome is definitely alive and well amongst the commenters here. I found Angry Boys hilariously funny and so did many other people I know, as well as in other forums. Most of the commenters here obviously didn’t watch a whole lot of the show, or have a very different sense of humour to myself and hundreds of thousands of loyal viewers.

  12. Unless we think that every single piece of Aus TV should be submitted, there needs to be a cut-off point. Whether it was intentional or not, Angry Boys didn’t make that cut-off.

Tall-poppy syndrome or not (I’m going with “not”) the simple fact of the matter is that most people didn’t like it. The ratings plus hundreds of comments on various boards, forums, and blogs attest to that.

@Gronk – you’re confusing the Logies with the Gruen’s Golden Turd.
